Job Description

The Fresh Market Bakery Category Manager is responsible for the selection, development and management of the assortment and merchandising plans for the Bakery department.  The Category Manager will work with the Bakery Director to achieve budgeted sales, gross profit and shrink objectives set for the company.  The Category Manager will also manage the trade relationships, periodically evaluate their performance and make necessary changes.  Bakery Staff will report into this role and oversee daily business functions.

Responsibilities
  • Ad hoc duties as assigned by Bakery Director
  • Assist in developing business plans that meet budgeted goals
  • Manage the relationship with SuperValu
    • Inclusive inventory levels and discards
    • Assortment and turns
    • Prior experience dealing with third party distributors
  • Ensure all merchandising programs are clearly defined and communicated to Operations Team
  • Manage relationship with the trade
    • Inclusive brokers and principals
    • Create, monitor and manage vendors funds to ensure funds maximize sales and profitability
    • Serve as primary interface with brokers and suppliers
  • Conduct periodic category reviews to assess performance, adherence to quality standards and ensure we are on brand
    • Report findings and evaluations to Director and make recommendations
  • Liaise with peers in other departments to create On Brand cross merchandising plans 
  • Oversee the relationship and performance of wrap suppliers
    • Seek to reduce costs while maintaining high level of quality and appearance
    • Evaluate and report on item performance impacted by wrap adjustments
  • Sales Planning
    • Vendor deals/promotions
      • Maximize trade spends to drive sales and profitability
    • Advertising/Marketing funds
    • Preparing promotional plans in advance
    • Planning distributions/allocations
    • Creating weekly/monthly merchandising display plans
      • Work with VM Team to build schematics
  • Thorough understanding of Store Operations
    • Store receiving
    • Reset chronology
    • Back stock handling/tools
    • DSD issues/procedures
    • Perpetual inventory/automatic replenishment principles

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of retail experience
  • Bachelor's degree, preferred
  • Experience in a Specialty Food environment/managed Bakery category, preferred
  • Comfortable with Excel, PowerPoint, Microstrategy and databases
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work under deadlines and multiple priorities
  • Strong customer interface experience
